Chakra is a Sanskrit word that literally means a wheel or a disk. In Ayurveda and yoga meditation, this term means wheels of energy throughout the body. There are seven major chakras, which align the spine, startingfrom the base of the base of the spine through to the crown of the head (Swami 2008).

To visualize a chakra in the body, you should think of a swirling wheel of energy where consciousness and matter converge. This unseen energy referred to as Prana is an important force, which helps us to be healthy, vibrant and alive (Swami 2008). These whirling wheels of energy correlate to huge nerve centers in the body. Each of the seven main chakras has a group of nerves and main organs too as our spiritual, emotionaland psychological states of being.

.
Everything is in motion, and it is therefore important that the seven major chakras remain open, aligned and fluid. In instances when there is a blockage, energy does not always flow. Keeping a chakra open is a daunting task, though not so challenging if you have awareness. The body, mind, soul, and spirit are intimately connected and therefore being aware of an imbalance in one area will definitely help return the others into balance.
For instance, a man who has lost the wife develops chronic bronchitis, which remains in the chest and as a result experiences chest pains whenever he coughs. The whole heart chakra gets affected in this case. If he learns about the relationship between the loss and bronchitis, recuperation takes place very fast in case he honors the grieving process and treats that as well as a physical disease.

The first three chakras are referred to as the chakras of matter, and they start at the base of the spine. They are more physical in nature (Swami 2008).
The first chakra is also known as the Muladhara is the chakra of security, stability and our
fundamental needs. It includes the first three vertebrae, the colon, and the bladder. In most
instances when it is open, we normally feel secure and fearless.

.
The second chakra/Svadhisthana is the chakra of creativity and is the sexual center. It is
situated above the pubic bone underneath the navel and contributes to creativity in
expression.

.
The third chakra, which is also called the Manipura is a shiny gem and is the region from
the navel to the breastbone. This chakra is the origin of personal power.
The fourth Chakra, Anahata is in the middle of the seven chakras and unites the lower
chakras of matter and the upper chakras of spirit. It is also spiritual though acts as a
connection between our mind, body, spirit, and emotions. The heart chakra is the origin of
love and connection. In instances where we work through our physical chakras, the spiritual chakras are always opened more fully (Swami 2008).

.
The fifth chakra also referred to as the Vishuddha chakra, is situated in the throat region.
It is the origin of the ability to express ourselves verbally as well as the capability to talk
most truthfully. This chakra also encompasses the thyroid, parathyroid glands, jaw, mouth,
tongue and the neck (Swami 2008).

.
The sixth chakra, also called Ajna is situated in between the eyebrows. It is also called the
third eye chakra. Aina is the center of intuition.

.

Every human being has a center of intuition but may never take its warnings seriously. If one concentrates on opening the sixth chakra, he will definitely be in a position to improve this ability (Swami 2008).
The seventh chakra, also known as Sahaswara chakra or the thousand-petal lotus chakra is
situated at the crown of the head. It is the chakra that is responsible for the enlightenment
and spiritual connection to our higher selves, others, and ultimately, to the divine. It is
situated at the crown of the head (Swami 2008).

.
In case you want to align the chakras in the body, you must first be aware of the chakras that are not in balance. Our bodies are always in continuous change between the balance and imbalance. Imbalances can be difficult to detect if you do not have an apparent problem in a particular area of the body. It is always advisable to bring awareness to your body/mind and commence to try to know about its signals and hints.
For instance, somebody who suffers from constipation many times may have a problem with the blockage of his/her first chakra. A sore throat that keeps coming back may hint to a blocked fifth chakra. Recurring headaches in the forehead region may mean that your sixth chakra is blocked.
